After getting some emails about our post on CFL’s vs standard incandescents it seems we overlooked the next option. Expected to ship in 2011, GE will be bringing to marked a 9 watt LED bulb (40 watt equivalent) boasting a 17 year life expectancy. To top it off, the bulb looks pretty darn cool too.

The bulb is listed at 9 watts as a 40 watt incandescent equivalent for a energy savings of 77%. The unique design of the bulb is said to overcome a problem plaguing most of todays LED bulbs, tending to be directional.

General Electric looks to stay ahead of legislation with these bulbs noting in their press release that incandescents are on their way out

New Lighting Legislation
Starting in 2012 and continuing through 2014, standard incandescent light bulbs are going away as a result of U.S. federal lighting efficiency standards:

  • 100-watt bulbs can no longer be made in January 2012;
  • 75-watt bulbs can no longer be made in January 2013; and
  • 60- and 40-watt bulbs can no longer be made in January 2014.

GE has consumers covered each step of the way with alternatives such halogen, CFL and LED bulbs that already meet the new efficiency standards.
