Todays simple tip helps you understand why your ceiling fan has a direction switch, and how to use fan direction to maximize energy savings and comfort.

All modern ceiling fans have a switch for changing direction of airflow. This is a great addition to the fans as it enables us to control the way air is mixed in the home. The two positions known as forward and reverse, act in the following ways. Forward forces air down from the fan drawing this air from the ceiling area down onto the room. This effect is beneficial in the summer season as you will fell the air flowing creating a cooling effect as the air moves past you, akin to the principal of wind chill. Conversely, in the winter, this is not a very desired effect. In the winter it is recommended you use the reverse setting, this will pull air up from the center of the room and have it fall in the edges of the room. This allows mixing of the warmer air near the ceiling to be mixed with the cooler air near the floor without having the breeze in the room.
