Hardwood flooring is a wonderful investment, bringing value and beauty to your home. Secure your investment by properly maintaining your floor’s beautiful appearance. A well cared for floor will last for many years. Although wood flooring requires a little more maintenance than other flooring, remembering a few simple tips will keep thing easy.

First, know your floors enemies: Furniture, dirt and water are the most common. An inexpensive way to prevent furniture from scratching your floors is by placing self adhesive felt pads on the feet of tables, couches, and chairs. Also, be sure to lift furniture when moving it rather than dragging it across the floor.

Place floor mats near entryways to prevent dirt from being tracked onto the floor. Sweep floors often with a soft bristled broom. Accumulated dirt can act as an abrasive, scratching the surface of your floor. A dust mop is also highly recommended to keep floors clean. To dust the floor, spray a small amount of hardwood floor friendly cleaner on the mophead; just like you would polish wood furniture with a cloth. A canister vacuum with brush attachment works well for removing large amounts of debris. Do not use a rotating brush vacuum on floor as it may cause scratches or dull the surface.

Water can be the most dangerous for your hardwood floor. Clean up any spilled liquids as soon as possible. Clean floors with a slightly damp mop or cloth. The amount of water placed on the floor should be able to dry within a minute or two. Do not let water pool on the floor; This may cause water to leak into the seams and cause warping. A pH neutral floor cleaner may be required for a more thorough cleaning.

Following these simple tips will ensure that your floors stay beautiful for many years to come.
