Removing wall paper can be a major pain! I’ve tried metal scraper, I’ve tried the “grab and pull” I’ve ended up with hundreds of scraps of wall paper laying on the floor, sweat on my brow and anger in my heart :) trans Removing old wallpaper with a heat gun

Well never again, with the help of a heat gun. Heat guns look like hair dryers, but with a lot more heat. It’s most common purpose is to remove old paint or adhesives, using it’s very high temperature to melt these materials making removal a cinch.

So here goes, SAFETY FIRST! Like any home improvement project, safety needs to be priory 1! You’re going to want some nice construction quality gloves, eye protection and a respirator. Respirators are relatively cheap, about $30, and should be used in any project that creates fumes or dust. Also, make sure to open windows and use a fan in the area to properly ventilate potentially hazardous fumes.

The first thing I recommend you do is remove your baseboards, then start near the bottom of the wall paper applying heat to the wallpaper from about 10 inches away. Keep the hot air gun in motion, we don’t want to burn the wall or the wallpaper. Use a side metal scraper to lift the paper away from the wall as the adhesive weakens. Continue slowly up the wall until the entire section of wallpaper is removed. Having a helper either working the hot air gun or scraping and pulling the paper really helps move things along.

When you have all the paper removed you may have some glue residue on the wall, use sandpaper 80, 100 then 120 to remove the remaining glue, prime with primer and you are ready to pain, apply new wallpaper, or any other wall covering you desire.
