When it comes to getting clear, clean windows and mirrors, you have several options that will all work better than just using your commercial window cleaners.I recommend first getting in the mind set that your windows and mirrors may not be streak free from the very first wipe. The first thing is to clean the window to remove any smoke, dirt or water spots. Know that dirty windows and mirrors may take several passes before all build up is removed. After the window is clean, comes the magic of streak free shine.
To clean the build up off of the window, you may use several different options. A commercial glass cleaner or hot soapy water and a towel is a good place to start. Several attempts may be necessary to have a clean window or mirror.
Once the window or mirror is free of the build up, now you have a few other options to make them shine. Although the towel may work well for washing the window, it will leave lint during the shining process. I recommend using either newspaper (black and white pages – not slippery colored ads) or coffee filters. Both will clean without streaks or lint left behind. Although the newspaper won’t leave ink on the windows or mirrors, it may leave some residue on your hands. This is where you may choose the coffee filters instead.
As for the solutions, a few different ingredients will work. White vinegar will work all on it’s own. You may also mix white vinegar and ammonia. Ammonia is strongly scented and can be harsh on your skin, so I would recommend latex gloves when using ammonia. A way to get the ammonia in without being too overpowering is to instead mix the vinegar with glass cleaner containing ammonia, rather than straight ammonia.
When wiping, keep your patterns consistant: Either swipe left to right, or up and down. Changing directions may end up in streaking. If you are unable to get into the tight corners with the newspaper or coffee filters, dip a cotton swab in your solution and use that to get into the corners.
